Byzantine wooden crucifix Russia XVIII century 25x15 cm.Byzantine type crucifix in wood and levkas, painted with egg tempera. Dating back to the 1700s, this crucifix comes from the city of Moscow, Russia and measures 26.6x14.8cm.
The crucifix has a dark red background with which the body of Christ stands out, portrayed not as dying but with a distinctive royalty and asceticism typical of the Byzantine style. Unlike the Western tradition, Christ is portrayed here as affixed to the cross on four nails, and with a third arm inclined to remind us that the cross is the 'Scales of Justice'. At the base, the skull of Adam is portrayed, a symbol of how all humanity has been redeemed from original sin thanks to the sacrifice of the Savior.This precious and ancient Byzantine crucifix is delivered with a certificate of authenticity and export document.
