Russian hand painted icon, Dormition of Mary 6x9cm.
The Marian Dormition is the most important celebration of the Christian East and it corresponds to the celebration of the Assumption of Mary in the western culture.
In the icon Gabriel announces to Mary her death; she asks to see the Apostles, she prays on the Mount of Olives and makes her funeral bed. It is then that the Apostles gather together in Jerusalem for the Lamentation.
Behind the bier, Christ appears and he holds the soul of the mother in his arms: "Virgin Mother daughter of thy Son".
This small icon is very refined, hand made by the painters of the Russian school of Palekh.
