Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker icon ancient Russia 19th century 52x44 cm. Nicholas was a popular saint in Europe and in the Greek and Slavic world. He was born in Patara in 280 and died in Lycia between 345 and 352. Nicholas was, in addition to being an exorcist and a healer, the perfect defender of the Christian faith. In fact, at the Council of Nicaea he opposed the heretical bishop and was stripped of his sacred insignia and imprisoned. The appearance of Christ and the Virgin restored his freedom and episcopal dignity. In the icon, he is represented half-length, in bishop's robes, wrapped in the omorphorion adorned with crosses, blessing and with the gospel in his hand.
