Luce & Friends: The Jubilee Mascot and Her Companions

Luce, the mascot of Jubilee 2025, does not embark on her pilgrimage of faith and hope alone: with her are many small friends who embody the values and purposes of the Holy Year.

At the heart of the Holy Year 2025, the Catholic Church presents an extraordinary mascot that embodies the spirit of the Jubilee: Luce, accompanied by a group of special friends who make her journey even more meaningful. This family of characters, created in the unmistakable style of Simone Legno, the founder of the Tokidoki brand, transforms the spiritual pilgrimage into a visual narrative rich in symbols and profound meanings.

Meet Luce, the mascot of Jubilee 2025, a character inspired by the aesthetics of Japanese manga, representing a new openness of…

During Luce’s debut at Lucca Comics & Games 2024, Italy’s most important comic and illustration fair, with the Holy See’s Dicastery participating for the first time, Archbishop of Lucca Paolo Giulietti highlighted how the Luce & Friends project uses meaningful symbols like garments, pilgrim staffs, and shells to convey the Jubilee’s message. The mascot Luce, showcased in Lucca and highly appreciated on social media, demonstrated the Church’s ability to connect with young people using their language. However, the Archbishop emphasized that the Jubilee will not stop there, as many other initiatives dedicated to the youth are planned.

Luce & Friends is not just a project featuring the small mascot of Jubilee 2025 and her companions; it becomes a powerful tool for communicating Jubilee values. Through these characters, the pilgrimage turns into an accessible narrative where each element highlights the importance of mutual support, prayer, and hope. Luce and her friends’ journey reminds us that the path of faith, much like a pilgrimage, is never a solitary journey. It is an experience of communion where every step, every encounter, and every symbol helps build a bridge between the earthly and the divine, between tradition and renewal, between the Church’s past and future.

In Luce’s journey, every object tells a story of faith. The pilgrim’s staff symbolizes the support needed during the arduous path toward the spiritual goal. The green-colored dirty shoes reflect the humility of the traveler and the hope that guides every step. They also reference the message written in green in the Jubilee logo: Pilgrims of Hope. The Rosary represents the constant dialogue with God through prayer.

But alongside the little pilgrim with blue hair and bright eyes, we find other significant characters. Let’s get to know them.

Luce and Santino Like St. Roch and His Dog

Luce, the protagonist of this Jubilee journey, never travels alone. By her side is Santino, a small white dog with brown spots, reminiscent of one of the most beloved figures in Catholic tradition: St. Roch. St. Roch is often depicted with a dog by his side, linked to his life and charitable works. The story tells that, during his pilgrimage to help plague victims, St. Roch contracted the disease and withdrew to a cave to avoid being a burden to others. In this moment of solitude, a dog found him and began caring for him: licking his wounds and bringing him bread daily, stolen from his master’s table. This gesture of loyalty and compassion not only saved St. Roch’s life but also created a symbolic bond between the saint and animals. The dog thus represents care, compassion, and faithfulness—values reflecting St. Roch’s work toward others.

Just as the saint pilgrim was accompanied by his faithful dog during his devotional journey, Luce finds in Santino a companion symbolizing friendship, as well as divine faithfulness and assistance on the spiritual path.

Fe, Xin, and Sky: Luce’s Travel Companions

Luce’s pilgrim friends—Fe, Xin, and Sky—embark on the symbolic pilgrimage of hope through the Holy Year with the Jubilee 2025 mascot, designed to embrace and represent all cultures of the world. Each of them wears a brightly colored raincoat, reflecting the kawaii style desired by the artist, but perhaps also carrying symbolic meaning.

Luce’s raincoat is yellow, a color that evokes light, which gives her name, as well as the Vatican flag colors—yellow at the hoist and white at the fly.

Xin symbolizes Asian believers, with a cherry blossom pinned to their pilgrim staff. Their green raincoat might represent hope, perseverance, and constant attentiveness. In Christian liturgy, green accompanies the daily journey of priests and the faithful, symbolizing trust in the spiritual path and divine presence. The teddybear-shaped purse conveys tenderness, as well as care and respect for animals.

Sky wears blue, the quintessential Marian color, perhaps embodying the harmony that unites pilgrims in their shared journey. Their face reflects African heritage, and they carry a guitar.

Fe represents South America, dressed in red—a color symbolizing Christ’s Passion and the blood shed in martyrdom by Him and the saints. A Bible peeks from their pocket.

Other Symbols Accompanying Luce

The angel Iubi and the dove Aura further enrich the spiritual significance of the Jubilee 2025 mascot’s journey. The angel represents divine protection in times of difficulty, with a small anchor embroidered on their cap, symbolizing hope. The dove has always symbolized purity and spiritual renewal, as well as the constant presence of the Holy Spirit. The olive branch in its beak is a clear call for peace, something the world greatly needs.
