The enchanted atmosphere of Christmas in North Europe Stockholm and Gothenburg

In Sweden, Christmas looks even more magical. Maybe that is because winter is colder and darker than in other countries, and people need to concoct something to warm up their bodies and hearts. Or maybe that’s because the traditions of that country are so suggestive and deeply rooted that they transform reality, making streets and houses look really special, enchanted, for the whole duration of the holiday.

That is what Christmas markets in Stockholm and Gothenburg are all about: places of absolute enchantment. Especially in Gothenburg, the city literally lights up with millions bright decorations placed along city streets and houses facades, connecting traditions and innovation in an explosion of colorful and picturesque effects. Christmas markets in Gothenburg are many and multifaceted, form the most traditional in the Haga neighborhood, to the one in Kronhuset, where merchants are dressed up with traditional costumes. Artisanal products are the most common, like traditional foods, sweets, house decorations and candles.

Celebrations in Stockholm begin very early. The Swedish people are indeed very devoted to Saint Lucy and already from the end of November, the city celebrates her Saint, much earlier than the coming Christmas. Instrumental concerts and choirs can be found all day in churches and streets, lit up and decorated, and restaurants and bars serve traditional Christmas dishes. Great importance is given here as well to Christmas markets, set up not only in the squares and in the streets, but also in some of the most important historical and ancient buildings of the city, such as the one in the heart of the Old Town, or the one in the garden of the Royal Palace.

Close to the Royal Palace a sumptuous Christmas tree stands out, one of the biggest in the world. The whole city looks driven by a joyful and colorful excitement, music and songs, spicy scents and inebriating flavors; girls and boys dressed in white with candles crowns on their heads sing Christmas songs to those who want to listen. The holiday atmosphere is really contagious and magical!
